We are thrilled to announce that Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS) will now be known to the world and the people we exist to help as “Global Refuge.”

The decision to rebrand as Global Refuge is rooted in the growing worldwide need for compassion and support. With millions of people displaced by war, famine, climate change, persecution, and more, our mission of providing the “long welcome” has become more crucial than ever. The accompanying growth in the demand for our essential, expanded suite of services has sparked the need to identify ourselves ever more clearly and create a bigger table of supporters.

An Intentional Journey

Our journey to this new identity was careful, comprehensive, and collaborative, and the outcome is a reflection of our true identity.

Our new name speaks to the place of welcome we are creating for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers the world over. The word ‘Global’ not only describes the people we serve — those in need, regardless of origin — but also conveys the scale of our vision — leading as a beacon of hope and welcome, setting the standard for grace and compassion for all of humanity.

With its broad appeal and meaning, the word “Refuge” draws inspiration from our enduring Lutheran heritage. It conveys a sense of hope to all people, regardless of their faith traditions, just as our work does.

A Beacon of Hope

Inspired by Lady Liberty’s torch, our brand symbol has been modernized, adopting a circular form that reflects our ‘global’ theme. The symbol serves as a timeless reminder that immigration is a fundamental aspect of the American experience in a land of realized dreams. Like the statue and the torch, Global Refuge is a beacon of hope.

New Name, Same Mission

As Global Refuge, we become even more accessible to clients, partners, and supporters without altering our core mission. We remain dedicated to fostering a world of just and welcoming communities, informed by our Lutheran heritage and nearly 85 years of experience. Our faith-based identity remains integral to our organization, reflecting the spirit of love that shapes our work of welcome and strengthens our relationships with Lutheran communities and congregations, as well as with nondenominational and interfaith partners.
