Washington, D.C.— The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today announced its designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ukraine for 18 months, shielding approximately 75,000 Ukrainian nationals already present in the United States as of March 1, 2022 from deportation, according to DHS officials.

In response, Krish O’Mara VignarajahPresident and CEO of Global Refuge, said:

“This TPS designation is a concrete show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Protecting Ukrainian families from deportation is the least we can do amid a Russian onslaught that has targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure. We urge the administration and Congress to build on this momentum in surging humanitarian aid to the region, scaling up consular services at U.S. embassies, and ensuring the U.S. is positioned to welcome its fair share of Ukrainian refugees seeking safety.”
